Fabrice Cazenave was the 2018 recipient of the French Artists in Residence Program (FAR) joint Hill End Artists in Residence Program (Hill End AIR).

The FAR | Hill End Program is a joint initiative between BRAG and the French Embassy to Australia.

French artist Fabrice Cazenave’s drawings of the exterior landscape form a key part of his work. His large charcoal drawings are manifestations of special spaces for the artist, which he returns to recurrently, drawing out the meanings of ‘place’ and memory. They portray a kind of spirit world, an underworld perhaps or at least woodland at night, when things are reversed and hidden. These drawings are energetic transcriptions created en plain air, an exchange between the artist’s body and its surroundings. Cazenave’s practice often involves the access of the somatosensory system, not only by drawing with the eyes closed, but also under hypnosis, utilising the ‘the conscious perception of touch, pressure, pain, temperature, position, movement and vibration, which arise from the muscles, joints, skin and fascia’ in the act of drawing, sculpting and painting. His marks may represent spells or invocations.
Cazenave comes into the Hill End Artist in Residence Program as the inaugural recipient of the French Artist in Residence (FAR) program co-ordinated by the French Consulate in Sydney. FAR at Hill End AIR offers a French artist a six week residency in Hill End.
