Haefligers Cottage

Julia Gutman will produce a series of anthropomorphic and ephemeral sculptures at Hill End. Made of scavenged found materials from the residency surrounds, both natural and man-made, the works will investigate ways in which artists can work symbiotically with the land and its history, refuting the composition of a singular narrative and rather implying the layered and meandering stories embedded into the site.

With the aid of a metal detector, Gutman intends to performatively uncover objects beneath the surface of the area surrounding Haefligers Cottage which will be used to compose the sculptures. This act will parody ‘mining’ the landscape, with the unearthed objects ritualistically put back into the earth after the project is completed, questioning what it means to consume in an age of digital documentation and the role of authorship in archiving.
