JumaadiJUMAADI: 20 February - 23 March 2010

Jumaadi draws on his emotional response to landscapes to create drawings and paintings. During his time in Hill End Jumaadi will research and produce a body of work informed by Hill End's landscape and history while deepening his understanding of the Australian landscape. His body of work will include interviews with the local community, photography and stories and poems and sculpture.

 

  

 

Murray_DangerWendy MURRAY: 9 April - 7 May 2010

Wendy Murray uses her practice as an artist to explore the concept of trade mark and how it works within the concept of street art. During her residency at Hill End Murray will create stencils for a large scale temporary art work exploring notions of ownership and trade mark while enjoying the isolation of the location for the development of her work. Murray will also engage students at Hill End Public School in workshops that examine stencil skills, history and contemporary use.

Nathalie HARTOG-GAUTIER: 14 May - 12 June 2010

Having undertaken a residency at Murray Cottage in 2008 Nathalie Hartog-Gautier is returning to Hill End for her second artist residency to continue her research into the landscape. Having also undertaken residencies in Versailles and Paris, Hartog-Gautier wishes to bring together her work from across two continents to create a dialect from the contrast and juxtaposition of two vastly different landscapes.

Courtenay_Walpa_AGabrielle COURTENAY: 30 July - 28 August 2010

Gabrielle Courtenay uses her work to explore our subliminal relationship with the land. Courtenay's recent work explores changes to the Australian landscape since colonial times, investigating the dialogues between the juxtapositions of nature and our architectural and fabricated surrounds. Courtenay see Hill End as a unique location where the footprint of the past is still evident allowing the contemplation of an artistic dialogue between the past and present.



 

 

David HIRSCHAUSEN & Sarina NOORDHUIS: 1 - 30 September 2010

Hirschausen_white_wake_steps_2During her Hill End residency Sarina Noordhuis will map her encounters with historic mining sites by responding to the native and introduced flora and fauna that now covers their scarred and pitted surfaces. Noordhuis will observe and record key landscapes over a month, noting changes and patterns as they occur. Her work contains an appreciation for the poetry of time and place and will gradually evolve as she observes changes within the Hill End landscape.

David Hirschausen will be undertaking a joint residency with his partner Sarina Noordhuis. Hirschausen will use photography, digital video and time-lapse equipment to record images and sounds. His work explores light and space and the way in which a landscape, that may appear homogenous in a single moment, evolves into a rich complexity over time. Hirschausen aims to explore the way in which human response to the landscape can help to reveal rhythms over time.

LOGUE_Ship_II_Oil__2009Joanna LOGUE: 8 October - 6 November 2010

During her Hill End residency Joanna Logue will immerse herself in the Hill End landscape, share idea with the vibrant local arts community and continue to historically significant tradition of articulating the areas landscape and history. Logue works in a variety of mediums and will produce a body of work comprising of painting, video projections and mounted photographs.

Virginia HILYARD: 19 November - 18 December 2010

Virginia Hilyard will use her residency at Haefliger's Cottage to investigate the potential for ‘sonic memories'. Hilyard will collect a series of sound recordings from inside the cottage and its adjacent buildings, the surrounding gardens and nearby countryside to develop a project exploring sound, space and memory. Introducing sounds recorded during her recent residency in Paris, Hilyard will create sound scapes that explore the tenuous relationship between reality and illusion, actuality and memory.

Dean SEWELL & Tamara DEAN: 21 December 2010 - 22 January2011

Using photography Dean Sewell and Tamara Dean are interested in creating images by immersing themselves in the world of their subjects. During their Hill End residency Sewell and Dean will photograph people from the local community and the town in both staged and natural scenarios. Their work will incorporate interpretive impressions of the town and its people by introducing colour, abstraction and movement. Sewell and Dean will use their work to investigate Hill End's social history and artistic heritage.

Locust_Jones_Everyday_Atroscities4Locust JONES: 1 - 30 March 2011

Having previously spent time in Hill End drawing, Locust Jones is keen to return to Haefliger's Cottage and an environment that provides a stimulating platform for art production. During his residency Jones will produce a series of drawings.
